The more you learn about internet marketing, the more you will find the importance of list building being emphasized. However, when they are asked to explain lists and list building, they often stumble and are at a loss for words. A list is nothing more than a database of your potential customers; and list building is simply increasing the size of that list so that the number of people who may buy from you increases – and that is list building explained in its most basic form. People visit your site because something about what you have to offer has attracted their interest – how and why they get interested is another subject altogether. But just visiting your site does not mean that you will get their business – in fact, very rarely does a first visit result in any sales being concluded. The way to get sales is by building up your brand (your website and business in other words) and the way to do this is by constantly reminding people who you are, what you have to offer and how buying form you is better than buying from anywhere else. Lucrative list building is based upon developing a mailing list that allows you to focus your attention on your real market – those who are most likely to buy from you. The secret to doing this is to offer the right kind of freebies on your squeeze page to entice the right kind of people to give you their contact details and that means the freebie should be something directly relevant to what you are selling.

Next, keep your squeeze page clean – that means no (or at least the minimum number) of links to distract attention – the focus must be only on the freebie and getting the email addresses from the visitors. Keep the page short and to the point so the visitors can get directly to what is offered to them and react to that – too much material and too many words will distract them or cause them to lose patience in trying to find what’s in it for them and leave without opting in. The average first time visitor to a squeeze page sends less than 5 seconds in deciding whether on not to read further so the headline has to be something that grabs attention from the get go – remember you are trying to build a list of potential customers and the headline must be directed to only those who may buy from you. Keep the process of registering simple and do not ask for too much information other than the email address – make the process complicated and people will lose interest; ask too many questions and people may resent what they feel is your intrusiveness. Place a clear statement that after opting in there is a simple way to opt out if people wish to – knowing that they can change their minds later makes the decision to opt in easier.

After people register you could immediate give them the link to the download, but a better option is to use mailing software to send them an email with the link – this will allow you to confirm that the email address given is a valid one. Do not let talk of huge lists mislead you – lucrative list building is all about having a list of people who are really potential customers and not just people who’s addresses you have come across or bought – that is a waste of your time.
